Santorini Sightseeing
Santorini Island is the location of two of the most precious archaeological sites in Greece: the Akrotiri Site and Ancient Thira. The former is a wonderfully-preserved Prehistoric settlement that has been connected to the Lost Continent of Atlantis. Visitors can see multi-levelled houses, store rooms, staircases, an extremely sophisticated sewage system, and a large number of ceramics and pottery.
Ancient Thira is another well-preserved city with sanctuaries, an agora, a theatre, and other structures, built on a hill above the villages of Perissa and Kamari. It was used in ancient times as a lookout to protect the island against its invaders.
In Oia, you can visit the wonderful Maritime Museum, where a variety of nautical instruments, agreements, models and photos are displayed. In the capital Fira, we recommend visiting the Archaeological and Folklore Museums, as well as the splendid Museum of Prehistoric Thira. Fira is also home of the Gizi Manor and two majestic cathedrals. It is worth touring the villages to get a ‘taste’ of the island lifestyle, especially in Oia and Imerovigli, which are considered very picturesque.
Opposite the western coast of Santorini Island are the volcanic isles of Thirassia, Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni, which can be reached by excursion boat.
Santorini Beaches
Santorini is famous for its volcanic sandy beaches that are located on its eastern and southern coasts. The black beaches of Kamari, Perissa, Perivolos and Monolithos, as well as the Red Beach and White Beach near Akrotiri are the most popular.
